LinoLetter 2007/10

All about Value Packs &ndash now including the Platinum Collection!

! Welcome to the Current Issue of the LinoLetter ! Subscribe Unsubscribe

Introduction:

Here is an autumn treat: multitudes of new font Value Packs online. There are now over 4,000 packages! Along with these is a new way to license fonts from our premium Platinum Collection: we have introduced a series of Platinum Collection Value Packs, each offering the base fonts of a Platinum family at a lower price! Another sale in store is on the Adobe® Type Collection, OpenType® Edition CD-ROM. Including more than 2,100 fonts in the OpenType format, this font library contains a comprehensive selection of popular Adobe fonts. And for this issue’s last item, our Type Director’s column “Akira says ...” returns to shed light on inter-letter spacing.

Have fonts of fun!
Value Packs
Get more fonts for your money! Maybe you don’t want the entire type family, but you need more than a single weight. With the Value Packs, you get the most popular variations bundled together and at lower prices than purchased separately.

Platinum Collection Value Packs
Our Platinum Collection typefaces represent Linotype’s highest level of design quality. Fonts include the Linotype Univers®, Frutiger® Next, Linotype Syntax®, Sabon® Next, Compatil®, Optima nova®, Avenir® Next, and Palatino® Nova designs which have shaped both contemporary communication and the typographic landscape. Linotype is pleased to announce that these Value Packs, previously only available as complete families on CD-ROM, are now downloadable for each of these typefaces.

Adobe Type Collection OpenType Edition
Save 1,000 USD/EUR! The Adobe Type Collection gives versatility to creative professionals. Print, Web, Video or any other creative project – nothing is outside the realm of the Adobe Type Collection, OpenType Edition. This CD-ROM contains more than 2,100 fonts in the OpenType format, which together equal the character sets that would have been found in 2,900 traditional font files! This font library contains a comprehensive selection of popular Adobe fonts.

Grunge Value Pack
By now, regular LinoLetter readers are probably familiar with Linotype’s popular “themed” Value Packs, which bundle several fonts together for one low price. The theme for this month is “grunge.” What is grunge anyway? We think that it is a state of mind rather than a specific style. Our library is filled with gems from this unique stylistic movement, which was quite popular with letter designers in the ’90s. The Linotype Grunge Value Pack brings together five of our favorite experimental fonts from the last decade of the 20th century. All of these fonts are best used in larger display sizes of 18 points and above. Included are the Linotype Compendio™, Linotype Dropink™, Linotype Grassy™, Linotype Not Painted™, and Linotype Scrap™ typefaces.

Akira Says
Part of the font data that you use on your computer every day is spacing. Values set inside the fonts control the amount of space between each glyph. Some applications can also access additional data concerning the spacing of specific glyph pairs, which is referred to as kerning. Both general letter spacing (often called tracking) as well as kerning may also be manipulated by the user in applications such as the Adobe Illustrator® and InDesign® products. What is the best way to go about this, and when is it better to rely on the settings inside the fonts or within the application? Akira Kobayashi explains these topics and more in this month’s issue of “Akira says ...”

Frutiger Condensed Italic
Over the past few decades, the Frutiger typeface has left its mark on global design. Now the family has expanded even further! Recently, we created Italic variants for the Frutiger Condensed fonts for the OpenType Pro and Com character sets.
