Spemann’s style was unmistakable, marked by original ideas and completely new forms and ideas.
His tendency toward the unusual and adventurous resulted in unique, decorative characters.
When he wrote, the tip of his pen flew across the page, leaving behind rows of letters which displayed an almost unbelievable regularity of form and flow.

There was no need for corrections or even improvements to his subtle, classical characters; the beautifully formed letters stood in pure, balanced lines.

And yet Spemann’s calligraphy displayed emotion, which set his work apart from the elegant but impersonal work of many other artists.
Where other calligraphers produced perfect models of particular styles, Spemann created a reflection of himself, presented in the beautiful forms of his alphabets.
