Warren Chappell – born 1904 in Richmond, Virginia, USA, died 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA – type designer, book designer, illlustrator. Studied at the Arts Student League in New York. 1931–32: studies with Rudolf Koch in Offenbach, Germany as a punch cutter and type designer. 1935: studies illustration at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. Warren Chappell named his typeface after the Roman Emperor Trajan (Marcus Ulpius Traianus, 53 - 117 AD), who ruled during the first and second century AD. Chappell chose this name as the capital letters in his design are based on the inscriptional letters found on the base of the famous Trajan Column in Rome. Trajanus' lowercase, like all lowercase letters, are not Roman per se, but rather evolved out of the Carolingian Minuscule style, which was devleoped during the reign of the Emperor Charlemagne (c. 800). Trajanus gives texts a classic, almost calligraphic feel.
